Rosalind Nashashibi

Rosalind Nashashibi was born in 1973 in Croydon and currently lives and works in London. She is a filmmaker and painter and her often collaborative work uses cinematic traditions to develop unforeseen narratives and alternative ways of looking. Ìý

NashashibiÌýbeganÌýher residency in SeptemberÌý2019.ÌýShe worked in theÌýÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â’s on-site Artist’s Studio, benefitting from theÌýproximityÌýto the Gallery’s collection,ÌýresearchÌýand teams. The residency culminatedÌýin a publication and displayÌýof her new work in dialogue with gallery’s Spanish Baroque collection in Room 30Ìýin December 2020.ÌýÌý

The 2020 ÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â Artist in ResidenceÌýwasÌýa collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society, generously supported by Anna Yang and Joseph Schull, who acquiredÌýa workÌýby Nashashibi made duringÌýtheÌýresidency for the ÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â’s project partner, the Pier Art Centre, Orkney.Ìý

Nashashibi was appointed Artist in Residence after being selected by aÌýjury comprised of:ÌýAlessioÌýAntoniolloÌýDirector, Gasworks, London;ÌýKatrina Brown,ÌýDirector, The Common Guild, Glasgow;ÌýCaroline Douglas,ÌýDirector, Contemporary Art Society, London;ÌýNeil Firth,ÌýDirector, Pier Arts Centre, Orkney;ÌýProf. Louise Wilson,ÌýArtist and Daniel F. Herrmann,ÌýÌýCuratorÌýof Modern and Contemporary Projects,ÌýÁùºÏ²ÊÔ¤²â.Ìý

In 2017,ÌýNashashibi was shortlisted for the Turner Prize,Ìýand her work has beenÌýfeaturedÌýinÌýprestigious exhibitionsÌýincluding 'Documenta 14' (2017), 'Sharjah 'Biennial 10' (2011), 'Manifesta 7'Ìý(2008)Ìýand representing Scotland in the 2007 'Venice Biennale'. She was the first woman to win the Beck’s Futures prize in 2003. Recent solo exhibitions took place at the Secession, Vienna; The Art Institute ofÌýChicagoÌýÌýandÌýWitte de WithÌýCenterÌýfor Contemporary Art, Rotterdam. Her work is included in many public collections, among others the British Arts Council, UK; Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Tate Britain, London. Nashashibi is currently Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, London.Ìý
